INKED Inc. - a community for the counterculture

Similar to the "tattoo ignorance" thread, but on a lighter note: what are the things people have said about your tattoos that made you laugh, or wonder if they were a) serious, b) aliens from a distant planet or c) just plain stupid?

I get the "is that real?" question a lot. Occasionally I have to rub my arm so that people believe it's really real. I'd say that's your run of the mill a).

But what was between b) and c) was this: "I didn't know tattoos could be done in color!" from a girl younger than me. WTF? Where have you been in the last decade?

A clear c): "That one didn't come from [name of German youth magazine], did it?". I guess he was trying to be clever. I said "Actually, I draw this on every day." :D

Most times though, I am surprisingly patient with people asking me these questions, touching my arm with or without asking, or, as it happened to me while I was passing a butcher shop in Old Town Nice (France) just recently, literally getting dragged inside the shop and shown around to coworkers and customers. That was actually pretty funny :D.

I like the way one of them managed to subtly mention her boyfriend - you know, in case you started hitting on her!

Basically there are alot of dumbasses out there, but what amazes me is their conceit in offering their unsolicited opinions. Maybe I'm just really British and/or well brought up, but it wouldn't occur to me to voice such obnoxious things out loud. In fact, I'd be more likely to pay no attention, after all I don't go on at people for wearing clothes I wouldn't wear or dating someone I wouldn't.

Hopefully, one of these days, some people will learn to put their brain into gear before engaging their mouths... I shan't hold my breath, but I shall live in hope :)

Very true Carbine. Meeting people like that is very good for reminding me just how fortunate I am to be me and not them ! And sites like this are very good reminders of how wonderful it is to be counter-culture and still seen that way :)

Jeez, R. and they say New Yorkers are rude! Forget the bad neighborhoods, you should've sent them down to the Village or over to Williamsburg so they could get an eyeful of all the "ruined" people.

I got a poem tattoed on my leg Its about sixteen lines and kind of a mouthful Strangers at bars and niteclubs and anywhere way to loud to talk Always want me to read it to them and ask "whats your tat say?" I think many guys try to use this as a pick up line or something Once I realized this I just started answering "Lots of things" or "it goes on and on" then i walk away These guys need better pick up lines before they go out again

It seems every time I get a new tat, people without tats insist on telling me how to take care of it, how long to keep it covered and not to let it get infected.. It's gotten to the point where I start showing them my other tats and explain that I feel I know how to take care of them.

I realise that when you get a tattoo you have to be prepared to be asked about it (meaning, reason, etc.) but I'm not used to it and I hate justifying myself about this sentimental and personal piece of art... It's so ME. I understand people want to get the meaning as it is exposed on my body but I sometimes regret that it is so easily spotted by others :S But once I fill them in people react positively as the meaning is 'compassion' :D

Well, I think in all honesty my most hated question and most loved answer are: What does it mean (the most common is about the tattoo I ahve on my inner arm portion of my sleeve. A devil baby in kind of like a chriogenic tube or something. Connected to the rest of a themed sleeve.) My favorite answer is, none of your business. THe biggest thing that bugs me about it is that, I have tattoos for me, not so you can know more about me. I appreciate the curiosity, but I am not a freak at a show to be figured out.....

Do you have any tattoos? I plan on being a criminal defense attorney. How do you think a tattoo will affect my hiring process?
