Similar to the "tattoo ignorance" thread, but on a lighter note: what are the things people have said about your tattoos that made you laugh, or wonder if they were a) serious, b) aliens from a distant planet or c) just plain stupid?

I get the "is that real?" question a lot. Occasionally I have to rub my arm so that people believe it's really real. I'd say that's your run of the mill a).

But what was between b) and c) was this: "I didn't know tattoos could be done in color!" from a girl younger than me. WTF? Where have you been in the last decade?

A clear c): "That one didn't come from [name of German youth magazine], did it?". I guess he was trying to be clever. I said "Actually, I draw this on every day." :D

Most times though, I am surprisingly patient with people asking me these questions, touching my arm with or without asking, or, as it happened to me while I was passing a butcher shop in Old Town Nice (France) just recently, literally getting dragged inside the shop and shown around to coworkers and customers. That was actually pretty funny :D.

My response to the standard, "Did that hurt?" is "Oh no, it was all kittens and sunshine." My favorite WTF question was from a nurse, who was ready to attach a heart monitor to a tattoo on my chest that was still healing. I explained the situation and asked if she could put it on another spot. Her response was "A tattoo? What do they put into those?"

A few years back I was waiting in line at the grocery store. I overheard a little kid behind me in line talking to his mom... he said "Look Mom- A Bad Guy". I thought it was adorable.

hi! I went WTF when one of my mom's friends asked me: "Can I touch it?"... I said yes... It was in my small rural hometown Camuy, Puerto Rico... She never had that opportunity before... but, I will never do it again... I agree with BanSilini's comment...

Oh, and: "Did it hurt?" (duh!!!)... I always say: "A lot!!!, but I can turn pain into pleasure!!!" LOL

Now, another WTF moment was when my dad saw my tattoos for the first time... I thought he was going to go nuts (he is kind of conservative, like he didn't allowed by brother to grow long hair or have ear piercing), but he said: "Where did you get it?", and when I asked why, he confessed that he always wanted to get a tattoo with the logo of "Cangrejeros de Santurce", a local baseball team. He was too afraid of my mom's opinion and never told anybody, for 35 years!!!!. Last February I finally took him for his tattoo, he is 62... he was so happy that he cried... Now, he gets a lot WTF moments because people can't believe that he is that "type of guy" (now, remember, small rural town...)... I'm attaching a pic...

"a) serious, b) aliens from a distant planet or c) just plain stupid?"

i guess i'll go with options B&C... especially referring to this guy that i know which couldn't believe that i'm a shy person!! him ---> "C'mon... with all these tattoos you can't be shy!" <---- that's where my jaws touched the floor.... !!! and i still can't believe people can make so shallow assumptions..

did you know that you can take every question you've ever been asked about your tattoos and apply them directly to babies/pregnancy?

for example:

"wow did that hurt?",

"do your parents know", "what do they think"

"you're stuck with it now"

etc, etc

"was it expensive?"

I once had a very sweet elderly lady ask me 'did you get all painted up for a special weekend?' The look of shock on her face when I explained what was going on was priceless. Another time, someone asked me if 'those are the kind that peel off' (um, not without a LOT of blood).

Anytime someone asks 'why would you do that to yourself', my answer is 'I didn't. I paid someone else to do it.' It kind of leaves their jaw hanging most of the time.

my favorite wasn't an actual comment but thought i'd share anyway.
was walking through a store and an elderly lady actually made the sign of the cross when she saw me.
WTF?!?!

oh, in the fun category was when Philadelphia Eddie asked me "What happened to you? Fall into a color vat?"

I had a major WTF moment this afternoon, which I just had to share. And I hasten to say that I got the perpetrator back -- revenge is sweet.

I was in the hardware store today, wearing a tank top (which allows a good bit of my back piece to show), and there was this sour-faced old lady behind me. She peered around and looked pointedly at my back, and said in a fairly nasty tone of voice, "_Why_ would you do that to yourself?"

I looked at her, and said, in a sort of embarrassed way, "Well, you know, when my wife's not home, sometimes I just have to..." then I stopped, looked surprised, and said, "Oh, the _tattoo_...!"

She was so flustered she couldn't even respond. The cashier, however, damn near wet herself laughing.

It shouldn't matter, plain and simple. Any confident, secure guy worth going out with isn't going to be scared off by a little ink. Or a lot of it even.
