I noticed a few people here sit for lengthy times and was curious what's the typical time different people sit for. When I make my appointments we take a 4 hour block, and I usually am under the needle for 3 of that.

So how many hours do you sit for? Any marathoners here?.... lol :D

I always feel that the outlining hurts more. It's the one continuous line that i can't wait to end. I feel like i can get used to the shading easier.

I agree, I find the the coloring part was by far the worse

yeah, the more there is work in a single area, the more it is painful to me. The outline quickly moves around a much larger area, and doesn't seem to have the same effect...

well the longest session for me was about 5 hours...that was just for the outline and just a little shading. i guess the average is about 3 hours for me and thats about when i wanna stop :)

For my most recent I sat for about 5.5 hours for my leg. Pain wise I was fine but in the last half hour my leg wouldn't stop shaking so we had to stop. My artist could have gone on longer but I didn't want shaky lines because I couldn't physically keep my leg still. I did feel sick the rest of the night. I think a part of it was that I didn't eat any lunch that day.

For my back/ hip/ thigh the longest I sat was 4 hours, most were probably between 3-4.

I also think it makes a difference where you're getting tattooed, because I did not want to sit more than 4 hours on my back, hurt to much....but my leg didn't really hurt to much.

Funny, I had a similar experience with my kneecap that was popping around In hour 5-6. My quad would not relax.

I like to do around 2-3 hour sessions. I find after 4 I start to wear down alot and after 5 I'm pretty much beat and the endorphins have worn off/.

My longest session to date was 5 hours on my back.

Usually around 5 hours I've had enough. As I imagine is the case for most people! Horiyoshi does 1 hour sessions during which he actually tattoos for 45min. But he is happy to book you in day after day, which is contrary to how most other tattooers I know like to work. So that was kind of weird, going over the same area the next day and then the next day again.

When I went to Japan the most packed in was 3 x 5hr sessions over 1 week. Next year I'm getting my ribs done while on a trip and going to book in something like 5 x 5-6 hr sessions (bout 25-30 hrs) over 18 days. Wow I sound like such a hardass, but it's only because I'm travelling to the other end of the earth to get tattooed.

Guess that's where Horiyuki got the 2-hour rule (1.5- of actual tattooing). Though I'm sure large suitees get to sit for longer.
