BEWARE: APOSTROPHE OVERLOAD! Saw a sign on the window of a small gift shop last weekend in Meinfee, CA. I thought about taking a picture of to post, but just couldn’t make myself do it. The window read: Jean’s, Hat’s, Souvenier’s all 20% off on Weekday’s. Perhaps the sign maker charged by the letter’s?

HOLY CRAP this is one of those things that makes the muscles in my eyes twitch and the veins in my temples bulge out. It's almost as bad as "your" vs "You're" and "to" vs "too". Oh, wait, now I'm threadjacking, sorry. What really makes me bats is people twice my age who should KNOW how to write properly making this mistake. Schools nowadays suck, so I'll let young kids slide....then I whack 'em with a ruler like the nuns used to do until we got it right!!!

The "s" ending of a word is the exception that adds to the Apostrophe Mystique. From everything that I've seen s' would be the correct usage. However, I haven't seen everything, so... I'm actually more worried about the fact that I haven't been able to get on this site although I searched for it, and now I noticed the name has changed. What happened?

Hey KapitiK - that one seems to be question of personal choice. I went to a good old-fashioned British grammar school and was taught that it should be s', e.g. Dickens' novels, but I have seen s's used quite alot.

Personally I would favour s', but I am REALLY pedantic (it was pointed out to me the other day that people don't sing around me because I correct their lyrics). Plus, being in NZ we don't have a hope in hell of enjoying correct grammar and/or spelling!
